On a day when Arsenal showed a flicker of hope remains in their title bid, United sent an emphatic message to the Gunners and fellow rivals Chelsea.

With goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez and, most pleasingly, two for Wayne Rooney, United beat Aston Villa comprehensively and conclusively. It ended 4-0, but that figure could have been significantly higher. This was, quite simply, one of the Reds’ best performances of the season. With six games to go, it's a resounding statement of intent.

Nothing was lacking. Goals, skill, determination, and sumptuous football at times.Cristiano Ronaldo had a volley of his own saved by Scott Carson.

On 17 minutes the breakthrough arrived. Ronaldo, who else? And this must go down as one of the cheekiest of his 35 goals this term. After Gareth Barry and Wilfred Bouma failed to clear a corner, the ball fell to Ronaldo. With his back to goal he decided, rather than wasting time by turning to shoot, to backheel the ball through Martin Laursen’s legs and past Carson.

What is pleasing about Ronaldo is that, considering the frequency with which he finds the net, his joy at scoring never diminishes. He celebrates every goal as if it were a rarity. The Portuguese winger didn’t let some heavy tackles stop him playing, and provided the assist for United’s second goal on 33 minutes. Tevez - a bundle of energy chasing every cause - started the move which also involved Rooney and Scholes and finished it with a diving header at the far post from Ronaldo's delightful cross. Great goal. Glorious football. Villa’s defenders could only stand and admire.

At the other end, Ronaldo latched onto Scholes’ cross, but his volley deflected off Laursen and the crossbar. Then came the moment just about every United fan had wanted: Rooney's first league goal at home since October. Ronaldo backheeled the ball into Rooney’s path and the Reds forward rounded Carson, with Old Trafford holding its breath, and tapped the ball home. The roar of relief and jubiliation could have lifted the roof off.

There's still work to be done, but on this form the Reds have every reason to feel optimistic.

Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson has said that star striker Cristiano Ronaldo will never be as good as him.

Ferguson jokingly pointed out that he once bagged an impressive tally 45 goals in 51 games while playing for Dunfermline 42 years ago.

Ronaldo has overtaken several Old Trafford heroes already this season by notching up a staggering 34 goals. United fans are wondering whether he could reach Denis Law's total of 46 set in 1963-64.

Ronaldo has another 12 games left in the current season, if he plays every match and Manchester United reach the Champions League final.

Ronaldo was compared to the legendary George Best after he went past his record last week.

"When George played as a winger I don't think he ever stayed still. He roamed from side to side - he played on the right, the left and through the middle," The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.

"I've looked at Best's goals and a lot of Cristiano's are similar. He starts from wide positions before cutting inside. The boy's in tremendous form right now," he added.

And Ferguson also feels there are similarities between Ronaldo and another world great footballer - Diego Maradona.

Capello sees David Beckham in Ronaldo role

David Beckham got an unlikely supporter in England manager Fabio Capello when the latter said the former England captain could perform similar job, which Cristiano Ronaldo has successfully done for Manchester United, the media here reported Friday.

The speculations were rife after Beckham's landmark 100th appearance in Paris that he would be gradually eased out of the England set-up as Capello prepared for the World Cup qualification campaign. However, the England manager, reflecting on the first defeat of his reign, gave Beckham's supporters plenty of encouragement.

Capello pointed out that for the first half of Wednesday's 1-0 loss to France he had used Wayne Rooney as a lone striker, supported by Steven Gerrard, because that was precisely where each were currently playing for Manchester United and Liverpool, a report in Daily Telegraph said.

However, when it was put to him that, at club level, Rooney was supported by Ronaldo, while Gerrard worked with a striker of Fernando Torres's class, Capello replied: 'I have David Beckham and Rooney can be our Torres. I believe they are both good players.'

Capello does not imagine that the 32-year-old former England captain, whose best work is now largely confined to dead-ball situations, can ape the game of Manchester United's highly-mobile 23-year-old but it demonstrates he is not prepared to write off a man he came to know well at Real Madrid.

The Manchester United ace is bitterly attacked by Peacock for his gamesmanshp.
Other Premier League stars are also caught in the furious broadside from the Lions and Leeds Rhinos forward.
Players who cheat and dive, or who try to get opponents sent off, all cop it from the 6ft 5in 16st 6lb prop.
Peacock has also urged fans, especially children, to stop idolising players like that.
He said: "Cristiano Ronaldo's disgusting gamesmanship made me sick in the last World Cup.
"Nevertheless, children still wear the named shirts and think that it's the right way to win.
"The behaviour of some high-profile players legitimises diving, play acting and trying to get your opponents sent off by underhand means and teaches kids that lying is a fair part of society.
"The likes of John Terry, Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs don't seem to subscribe to that and they're the ones I admire rather than, say, Cristiano Ronaldo."
Peacock, writing in his autobiography No White Flag, grew up watching both rugby league and football.
But the 30-year-old, who hopes to lead England to World Cup glory later this year, says he is getting increasingly worried about the influence footballers have.
Peacock, who has a three-year-old son Lewis, added: "I have become disillusioned with soccer players as potential role models.
"The game is everywhere, and kids like my own young son, can't fail to be drawn to it.
"Although it's not the players' fault, the money involved has detached them from the general public, the reality and normality of everyday life.
"For me, what's more important is that some of their behaviour on the field is not honest.
"It may have come from abroad, but trying to cheat to win penalties sends out the wrong message about value systems and doing right by your fellow professionals.
"It starts with the governing body of the game - they have got to have a real will to stamp such behaviour out."
Peacock's annual earnings are in the region of £200,000 - less than what some footballers pocket in a couple of weeks.
But Peacock says it means there will never be any danger of league losing it's place in fans' hearts.
He said: "One of the main strengths of rugby league is that it hasn't lost touch with the close-knit communities that formed it, and it never should - that is its core strength, which cannot be said for the round-ball game."

With both sides preparing for Euro 2008, Portugal will feel aggrieved at losing two of their more dynamic players. Nani has a pulled muscle in his right leg, while Cristiano Ronaldo's problems are in his left.

Portugal last met Greece in the summer of 2004 in the European Championship final in Lisbon, where Hellas prevailed by a single goal.

Indeed, Portugal have not won against the Greeks in their last four attempts.

In his recent autobiography, 'Stand Up Pinocchio', former Liverpool assistant boss Phil Thompson revealed how Manchester United ace Cristiano Ronaldo could so easily have ended up at Anfield - for just ?4 million.

"Yes, he was good," Thompson wrote. "Portugal had two starlets, [Ricardo] Quaresma and Ronaldo, who played right and left wing for their under-21s. I watched them play and both were very good. It was a toss-up as to who was the best.

"I was invited to watch Sporting play Porto in the last game of their season. Tony Henry, the former Manchester City player and an agent with Paul Stretford's ProActive agency, was on the phone on a regular basis to see if we would take Ronaldo and asking if he could take us to watch him. I met Tony at the airport and travelled to Oporto. I met the player's Portuguese agent before watching the game.

"Ronaldo was quite good, but not as impressive as the first time I saw him. Tony was pushing the boy and saying he was a talent. He was saying, 'He'll only cost £4 million. It can be paid over the course of his contract at £1 million a year.' He also said the player wanted £1 million [a year] tax free. I said, 'The boy is only 18

That is a massive problem.' We would have had anarchy if the other players had found out how much we were considering paying for an 18-year-old kid in Ronaldo."
It was only months later that Ronaldo was on his way to Old Trafford for £12.24 million, a fee that Thommo described as "astonishing".

Torres can match Ronaldo says Benitez

Cristiano Ronaldo may have been hogging the headline ahead of Sunday's Premier League match between Manchester United and traditional rivals Liverpool but Anfield supremo Rafael Benitez believes Fernando Torres could pose just as big a threat at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Ronaldo, who has scored 33 goals already this season, breaking legendary winger George Best's club record the most in a campaign by a winger, has been in sensational form with champions United now three points of Arsenal at the top of the table.

Spain forward Torres has been almost as prolific as the Portuguese, with it 27 goals in 36 games, 20 in the Premier League, this season, including nine in his last six matches.

Nevertheless fourth-placed Liverpool head into this weekend's clash, which forms part of a 'Super Sunday' with Arsenal facing third-placed Liverpool, 11 points behind United.

Asked how Liverpool might contain Ronaldo, Benitez replied: "There is no special plan for him.

"They have Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and the rest. And if you concentrated on just Ronaldo you would lose (control) of the others.

"It is not about stopping Ronaldo. They must think, no doubt, about stopping Torres. Ronaldo is in form. But then Torres is also in form.

"I am happy with Torres's form, and because he is still only 23, I know he can improve.

"It is an achievement to score so many goals in your first season, he is continuing to work hard and that means he is very important for the club.

"People are comparing him with various famous players in Liverpool's history, but I would prefer to wait for a few years and then we can evaluate him.

"He is a good prospect still, and will be much better in the future. I am sure of that.
"It is hard to compare players from different generations. The game is faster and more physical now, but good players will always be good players."

Benitez has managed just one point from seven league matches United since he took over at Liverpool, with an FA Cup win at Anfield two years ago his only victory over Sir Alex Ferguson's men.

"This is a crucial time, and if we do win it takes us closer (to United)," he said. "If we keep winning we get close and closer. But if we lose it will be very difficult to move closer to them in anyway.

"If we win, and then beat Everton the following week, it will make things interesting.

"I know I have not won a league game against United, but we have been very close at times and only lost to last-minute goals."

Meanwhile, Benitez said the international break, after which Liverpool play city rivals Everton and then Arsenal, three times, in a 10-day spell, was an unwanted distraction.

"It is a big problem for all the top sides, playing internationals at this time of the season," he said. "They are only friendlies; I will never, never understand why they are played."

Ahead for Liverpool’s clash with Manchester United on Sunday, Reds boss Rafael Benitez spent some time fantasising about Cristiano Ronaldo.

In Rafa’s ideal fantasy football team, 33-goal Red Devil Ronaldo wouldn’t be subjected to his famous rotation policy, either.

When Benitez stopped daydreaming, though, he conceded that the Portuguese will be a major threat to his Reds this weekend.

"I would love to have Ronaldo in my fantasy league team, I doubt he would spent too much time on the bench," Benitez said cheekily.

"If I had a fantasy team, I would want Ronaldo. People would enjoy watching him play alongside [Fernando] Torres and [Steven] Gerrard.

"Fans enjoy watching all three, I would enjoy having them all in my team."

However, the Spanish gaffer won’t try to smother Ronaldo when he brings Liverpool to Old Trafford, for fear of United’s other dangermen.

Queiroz: Ronaldo Can Score Even More

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo notched twice on Wednesday to surpass George Best's record for goals scored by a winger in one season. But the Portuguese hopes to continue finding the net.

Such is Ronaldo's form at the moment that many at the club are hopeful he can surpass the 40-goal mark this season.

The Red Devils have at least 10 games still to play this season, with as many as 13 possible should they go all the way to the final of this year's Champions League.

And that leaves Ronaldo plenty of room to surpass even more United legends: possibilities include Dennis Viollet's record of 32 league goals for United, set in 1959/60, and Dennis Law's 46 goals in the season of 1963-64.

Apart from Law, Ruud Van Nistelrooy is the only ever Red Devil to have scored 40 times for the club in one single campaign, but given Ronaldo's current strike rate there's every chance he could join them.

Quieroz: Ron's Amazing

“Beating Best’s record is a fantastic achievement," said United assistant boss Carlos Queiroz. "Since the beginning of the season we started to feel that something special was in Cristiano’s sights.

"But I am sure most of us didn’t expect that this year he could go so far. We are happy with him but let’s see if he can get more before the end of the season. Maybe in the next eight games he can score one per game and that will give us a big chance to win the Championship.”

Ronaldo: Confidence High

Ronaldo himself reckons netting eight in eight in the Premier League is an extremely tall order, but promised to do his best. "I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved but I don’t expect to score every game, to be honest. I just try game by game to play well, not think about scoring goals.

"If you think too much that you’re going to score then you don’t. My confidence is high and I feel very good, in good form. The team is playing nice football - when the team is playing well, wingers and strikers feel more comfortable. My team-mates help me a lot with good passes and great opportunities to score goals.”

UEFA fined French champion Lyon $5,000 Thursday because a fan aimed a laser pen at Manchester United player Cristiano Ronaldo during a match.

Television replays showed a circle of bright, green light shining on the Portugal international during the first half of United's Champions League game at Stade Gerland on Feb. 20.

The fine was imposed for "incidents of an unsporting nature," UEFA said in a statement.

Manchester United staff reported the laser pen being directed from the stands before and during the match.

A UEFA delegate and the match referee submitted files to the European governing body's control and disciplinary committee, which gave its verdict Thursday.
There was no suggestion Ronaldo's health could have been affected.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw. Ronaldo scored the only goal in the second leg at Old Trafford as United advanced in the competition.

UEFA also fined four other clubs, including two from England, following crowd disturbances at UEFA Cup matches.

The governing body's disciplinary committee gave Spanish club Atletico Madrid the heaviest punishment, a $30,000 fine after fans threw missiles and fireworks at followers of English opponents Bolton on Feb. 21.

Atletico was also criticized for "insufficient organization" at Vicente Calderon stadium.

Bolton was fined $10,000 for crowd disturbances. Both clubs can appeal within three days.

In a separate case, SK Brann of Norway was fined $15,000 and English club Everton fined $5,000 after fans invaded the field and threw missiles at their game in Bergen on Feb. 13.

Brann can appeal the decision, but Everton's punishment is final.

"But my responsibilities are still the same. I do not change my game or personality just because I am captain. It was a marvellous night for me."

Sir Alex Ferguson felt that Ronaldo coped superbly with the captaincy, taking the extra pressure of the role in his stride.

"Cristiano looks for that kind of responsibility, I think he’s very comfortable with it," he told MUTV. "Not everyone wants to be captain to be honest with you, but he carries the mantle very well."

Ronaldo's second goal against Bolton was another superb long-range free-kick - his fifth of the season - and Sir Alex reiterated that the winger's repeated success is down to his commitment to practice.

"It’s another marvellous free-kick. He does practice them, as we know, and he has a technique, but the practice thing is the most important aspect in terms of getting shots on target," he said.

Yet again, Ronaldo's technique for striking dead balls came into question and, when asked if he had christened his style, he replied: "Rocket. I like to hear people say 'the Ronaldo rocket'. I am joking!"

A Tribute to the Unsung Heroes of Manchester United

The Munich air disaster took place on February 6, 1958, when British European Airways Flight 609 crashed on its third attempt to takeoff from a slush-covered runway at the Munich-Riem airport in Munich, West Germany. On board the plane was the Manchester United football team, nicknamed the Busby Babes, along with a number of supporters and journalists. Twenty-three of the 44 passengers on board the aircraft died in the disaster.

The European Cup had been contested since 1955, although no English club took part in the very first tournament on account of Football League rules. Manchester United entered the 1956-57 tournament and reached the semi-finals, being knocked out by eventual winners Real Madrid; they were thus one of the favourites for the 1957-58 tournament. Domestic league matches were played on Saturdays and European matches were played midweek, so although air travel was risky at the time, it was the only practical choice if United were to fulfil their league fixtures. Their team was known as the Busby Babes, a reference to their manager Matt Busby and to the average age of the players, which was unusually young.

Seven of Manchester United's players died immediately, and Duncan Edwards died from his injuries on 21 February. Two other players had to retire because of their injuries. Matt Busby was seriously injured and had to stay in hospital for some time after the crash, and was read his last rites twice. There was speculation that the club would fold, but a threadbare United team completed the 1957-1958 season, with United's coach Jimmy Murphy standing in as manager.A team largely made up of reserves and youth team players beat Sheffield Wednesday 3–0 in the first match after the disaster. The programme for that match showed simply a blank space where each United player's name should have been.

Although the team's league results were poor they reached the final of the FA Cup, losing 2–0 to Bolton Wanderers. Busby resumed managerial duties the following season and eventually built a second generation of Busby Babes, including George Best and Denis Law, that went on to win the European Cup a decade after the disaster in 1968, beating Benfica. Crash survivors Bobby Charlton and Bill Foulkes were two of the other players who lined up in that team.
